About the Role:


This role is to support the Chief Sales Officer.  The position is an Executive Communications role to build (quickly) and manage the brand and reputation of the Chief Sales Executive. It requires a self-starter, consultative mentality and a value-add approach to every interaction. He is seeking a true communications partner.


The role will manage his engagement offline and online with key constituents and to establish a thought leadership platform to establish his credibility in his role leading the Worldwide Sales force, as well as to map to Riverbed’s sales and marketing objectives. The role involves both internal and external communications, writing, messaging, presentation development, crafting speeches, and managing social media engagements. The position will work directly with the Chief Sales Officer on a daily basis, including potential travel. There will be some support provided to the SVP of Channels to help them establish their platform and communication cadence.


Duties and Responsibilities:


The position requires demonstrated experience in delivering high-quality Executive level communications, with a strong bent towards storytelling, social engagement, constituency building and customer-centric Executive Communications. The ideal candidate will have worked in a start-up environment and possess an entrepreneurial attitude, creativity, passion and an ability to deliver a program that punches above the weight of business maturity.


The Director, Executive Communications will develop and propose the strategic direction of the Chief Sales Officer platform, form the program and execute the program -- soups to nuts.


She/he works closely with the leadership team – including Marketing and Corporate Communications - to ensure clear and concise messaging that aligns to company goals. The outcome will be establishing the right Executive brand and reputation that ultimately builds respect and trust with all key constituent audiences. Examples of such constituents include: customers, partners, influencers, Board and sales Executive staff, peers, team, employees and the industry at large.


This position requires extensive cross-group coordination at all levels, experience working with senior management, superior organization, written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to think strategically and drive compelling messaging, presentations, and speeches. In addition to offline communications, online communications and constituency engagement (influencers, as example) for the Chief Sales Officer, is key.


The Director, Executive Communications must also possess the maturity to respond to changing demands, responsibilities and deadlines while maintaining composure and meeting expectations. He/she must be detail and process-oriented, and effective at engaging and influencing. He/she must be a strong collaborative individual contributor that is a natural leader and has a passion to learn the business.


Specific Duties Include:


  • Manage all aspects of executive speaking platforms including messaging pillars, activity schedules, identifying key arenas for communication, battles to win, constituents to win over.
  • Build messages and a storytelling approach to drive high visibility for the Chief Sales Officer across the industry.
  • Pitch, place and manage stories that amplify Chief Sales Officer’s POV -- in his leadership role.
  • Write– blogs, POVs, contributed articles and commentary.
  • Manage social communications. Establish engagement in social communities internally and externally.
  • Internal communications – build a cadence of leadership communications to the Worldwide Sales organization, as well as to broader Riverbed teams.
  • Develop and create presentations used by the Chief Sales Officer, aligned with the overall communication strategy.
  • Create compelling PowerPoint presentations.
  • Develop speeches from start to finish including all creative elements such as videos, demos, etc. to reinforce key messages and story tell to targeted audiences.
  • Work directly with the Chief Sales Officer to prepare him for delivery of a story, messaging internally (sales force) or externally to industry, media, at events, etc.
  • Prepare the Chief Sales Officer for customer meetings, like an EBC, with materials meet the needs for the meeting.
  • Work effectively within all levels of the organization, from Executives to individual contributors.
  • Provide executive communication support to our SVP of Channels


Required Skills and Experience:


  • 10+ years of experience in executive communications
  • Executive communication experience supporting sales teams
  • Experience with developing and implementing complex communication strategies and plans
  • Executive reputation building experience
  • Demonstrated experience in enterprise collaboration, social media engagement
  • Experience managing intranet content; familiarity with social media; SharePoint experience highly preferred
  • Ability to collaborate with stakeholders at all levels of the organization, including leaders and managers
  • Partner with other corporate functions, such as marketing, corporate communications, service, customer support, etc. to align messaging platform
  • Must be able to think strategically within the ‘big picture' framework of the company, while also finding innovative ways to build brand
  • Ability to quickly grasp complex subject matter and translate it into messaging that is easily understood by constituency at all levels; ability to determine which information is appropriate for which audiences and for which channels
  • Strong project management and cross-group collaboration skills, demonstrating the ability to plan and drive for results and hit deadlines while working with diverse groups within the organization
  • Expert tools knowledge and technical skills working with Prezi, WebEx, videos and other communications applications. *Digital communications background is an asset
  • Self-starter, detail-oriented, proactive, able to work independently as well as in teams
  • Ability to work well under pressure and tight deadlines
  • Innovation and creativity
  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Strong communicator – written and oral -- is a must!
  • BA or higher in communications or business
