About this Position

Reporting directly to the SVP & General Manager SteelHead, SteelConnect and SteelFusion, the Senior Vice President of Engineering will be a member of the company’s senior leadership team and is responsible for leading platform and application engineering for Riverbed’s three key product lines. This person must have a proven track record of successful product delivery of enterprise software and have a reputation for driving change, delivering results and team member mentoring.  Riverbed is looking for an innovative leader that has experience in technologies and can lead all worldwide engineering efforts. This person will be accountable for the stability and scalability of our product platforms. Specifically, they will be responsible for the full development lifecycle through application and platform engineering, design and quality assurance.


You will lead a talented multi-site engineering team focused on the management and development of our SteelHead, SteelFusion, SteelConnect product lines. You will help shape the vision for our next generation products in collaboration with stakeholders like Product Management and the Chief Technology Office team while providing outstanding support for our currently shipping products. Our open and supportive environment will allow you to learn from and influence teams working on all parts of the Riverbed organization. Being hands on will be critical to success in this position.  Importantly, this person must be capable of growing, developing and managing a large, high performance engineering organization with open communications and transparency. Characteristically, they must have the right balance between strategic and get-it-done with a critical eye towards ensuring Riverbed is reaching milestones.


Primary responsibilities:

  • Lead and drive SteelHead, SteelFusion, SteelConnect engineering strategy and direction including short and long range goals and where to make investments.
  • Collaborate with SVP/GM President, Product Management teams and leaders across functions to define future product offerings.
  • Work actively in product development and lead in the trenches as needed, providing innovative solutions to real engineering problems and serving as an example to staff.
  • Lead and build a first-class engineering team, hiring and retaining A level talent and developing the team’s industry knowledge, technical proficiencies and essential soft-skills.
  • Maintain and enhance software quality by various methods including lean startup principles, agile methodologies, XP and continuous delivery.
  • Integrate plans into and drive execution of new product launches and continuous product enhancements.  Collaborate with internal Riverbed business units (Marketing and Sales) and external client groups in pursuit of superior market leading product development to crease and enhance products our customers will value.


Professional Experience and Skills - the ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • Accomplished engineering executive with 15+ years of enterprise software and hardware development experience along with 10+ years of staff management experience.
  • Entrepreneurial and comfortable in a fast-moving, results-driven environment that includes a background in both small and large engineering development organizations.
  • Successful track record of defining and executing strategic and innovative development projects which have had major impact on company and market share performance.
  • Excellent leadership abilities along with proven success in building, growing and managing a highly talented and motivated global organization of 600+ engineering, QA, technical writers professionals.
  • Experienced and strong supporter of the agile methodology of software development.
  • Prioritize and allocate resources against an array of simultaneously-running projects, with appropriate analysis, along with bringing major new features or price points all the way from conception to market and into ongoing maintenance.
  • Strong understanding of current and emerging technologies such as cloud computing.
  • Great written and oral communication skills including the ability to present ideas on both the technical and business sides and at the executive, customer, intercompany and team levels.
  • Engaging personal style with strong interpersonal and collaboration skills with a predisposition towards mentoring staff and encouraging their professional career development.
  • Self-directed with the ability to make strategic, complex and difficult decisions at all times.
  • Familiar with the Networking, SDN/SD-WAN space and knowledge of best practices with regards to SDLC.
  • Advanced technical/engineering degree; MBA is helpful.
  • Strong strategic thinking ability and demonstrated business acumen.
  • Track record of managing product lines, budgets, staffing levels and achieving financial results.
