About this Position

The Senior Hardware Development Engineer is responsible for all hardware design activities of Riverbed Wi-Fi Access Points. He/She is the design authority for the CPU board development, analysis, verification, quality and on-time delivery of world-class wireless networking products. The Senior Hardware Development Engineer will ensure proper design and analysis of APs in the following engineering disciplines: CPU digital design, memory subsystems, Ethernet and high speed interfaces, PoE and power distribution, thermal characteristics and mechanical considerations.



  • Work closely with PLM, Project Managers, Software Engineering, QA Group and Management to understand and implement hardware product development plans and deliver against tight schedules.
  • Interface with, review and provide expert guidance to ODM partners working on Riverbed Wi-Fi products.
  • Research and recommend components and technology used in BU hardware including high performance microprocessors, volatile and non-volatile memory, DC/DC power regulators, Ethernet components, high speed connectors, printed circuit board technology, etc.
  • Review project schedules for cost, schedule and technical accuracy.
  • Identify, procure, operate and maintain laboratory test equipment as needed to support WBU development activities.
  • Work with the WBU embedded software group on hardware/software tasks like first article bring-up, debugging, interface tuning (Memory, Ethernet, PCI Express) and bug resolution.
  • Provide assistance to Riverbed Customer Support on customer support tickets.
  • Provide assistance to Product Management on product beta testing.
  • Support the Riverbed Regulatory group with U.S. and international product certifications such as emissions, safety and environmental regulations.
  • Assist Riverbed Operations group with hardware quality investigations and sustaining engineering tasks such as component EOL replacements and manufacturing troubleshooting.
  • Provide support to external test laboratories as needed with well written test procedures on Riverbed product configuration and operation.
  • Participate in and support as needed other WBU test activities such as Wi-Fi Alliance or Federal business certifications.
  • Design and develop specialized hardware for other BU groups as needed.


Required Skills

  • CPU board design including: multicore processor implementation, memory subsystems, high frequency clock distribution, complex power/reset sequencing, high speed digital hardware design, placement/layout rules, board level power supply and regulation (802.3af/at/bt PoE), Ethernet and PCI Express interfaces
  • Expert knowledge of the following technologies and interfaces: DDR3/DDR4, NAND/NOR/eMMC flash, PCI Express, Ethernet, RGMII/SGMII, I2C, SPI, UART, JTAG
  • PCB component knowledge of simple active and passive parts such as small batteries, sensors, LEDs and high performance connectors
  • Experience working with off-shore development partners
  • CAD tool expertise with Cadence Orcad/Allegro schematic capture, library manager and layout viewer
  • Critical PCB analysis including product power estimation, high speed signal integrity and power distribution analysis.
  • Working knowledge of thermal design and analysis including passive/active cooling systems, air flow and thermal management techniques.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical design and its impact on system electronic design
  • PCB manufacturing technology and cost estimation
  • Linux operating system for embedded processor designs
  • Ability to remove and replace PCB components using excellent soldering skills



  • Education: BS Electrical Engineering or related field plus minimum ten years hardware design experience.
  • Minimum of five years experience in networking technology hardware development. Knowledge of Wi-Fi or other wireless technologies is a big plus.
  • Skilled user of Microsoft Office products and Sharepoint
  • Must have good understanding of Project Management practices including planning, scheduling and tracking.
  • Comfortable collaborating with multiple groups with possibly divergent interests including customers, product management, engineering, vendors and management.
  • Self-starting and independent worker with excellent communication skills who understands how to navigate projects firmly and tactfully.
