    About this Position

    The Senior RF Hardware Engineer is responsible for the RF design activities of Riverbed Wi-Fi Access Points. He/She is the design authority for the RF board development, analysis, verification, quality and on-time delivery of world-class wireless networking products. The Senior RF Development Engineer will ensure proper design and analysis of wireless interfaces through the following engineering disciplines: RF component selection/placement, FEM implementation, PA/LNA design, RF trace routing and signal integrity, radio digital interfaces, power regulation, thermal characteristics and mechanical considerations.



    • Work closely with PLM, Project Managers, Software Engineering, QA Group and Management to understand and implement hardware product development plans and deliver against tight schedules.
    • Interface with, review and provide expert guidance to ODM partners working on Riverbed RF boards.
    • Research and recommend components and technology used in RF hardware including diplexers, combiners, attenuators, baluns, switches, FEMs, LNAs, PAs, high speed connectors, printed circuit board technology, etc.
    • Analyze and optimize Wi-Fi radio boards for maximum TX output power for mask, EVM and regulatory limits.
    • Analyze and optimized Wi-Fi radio boards for maximum RX sensitivity for both conducted and transmitted conditions.
    • Review project schedules for cost, schedule and technical accuracy.
    • Identify, procure, operate and maintain laboratory test equipment as needed to support WBU development activities.
    • Work with the WBU embedded software group on hardware/software tasks like first article bring-up, debugging, interface tuning (PCI Express) and bug resolution.
    • Provide assistance to Riverbed Customer Support on customer support tickets.
    • Provide assistance to Product Management on product beta testing.
    • Support the Riverbed Regulatory group with U.S. and international product certifications especially intentional RF output requirements.
    • Assist Riverbed Operations group with hardware quality investigations and sustaining engineering tasks such as component EOL replacements and manufacturing troubleshooting.
    • Provide support to external test laboratories as needed with well written test procedures on Riverbed product configuration and operation.
    • Design and develop specialized hardware for other BU groups as needed.


    Required Skills

    • RF board design and evaluation including: MAC/Phy/Radio chips, EEPROMs, FEMS, LNAs, PAs, component placement and routing, signal tuning and impedance matching, filter design/analysis, RF PCB materials, and PCI Express interfaces
    • Expert knowledge of 802.11 RF characteristics including operating bands, channel sets/frequencies, data rates, modulation coding schemes, mask limits, channel bonding, MIMO, spatial streams, MU-MIMO, OFDM, SAW filters and SNR/EVM/PAPR/PSD limits.
    • Expert knowledge of RF test equipment usage including spectrum analyzer, signal generator and vector signal analyzers to evaluate RF designs for power output, TX mask compliance and RX sensitivity. Litepoint tester experience a big plus.
    • Experience with Broadcom or Qualcomm Wi-Fi power table limit schemes and test environments such as ART or WL to query and modify table values.
    • Comfortable with Linux embedded operating system.
    • Knowledge of Linux or Windows environment scripting languages for automating RF characterization tasks.
    • Experience working with off-shore development partners
    • CAD tool expertise with Cadence Orcad/Allegro schematic capture, library manager and layout viewer
    • Working knowledge of thermal design and analysis including passive/active cooling systems, air flow and thermal management techniques.
    • Working knowledge of mechanical design and its impact on system electronic design
    • Ability to remove and replace PCB components using excellent soldering skills a must



    • Education: BS Electrical Engineering or related field plus minimum ten years RF design experience.
    • Minimum of five years experience in wireless RF communications hardware development. Knowledge of Wi-Fi is a big plus.
    • Skilled user of Microsoft Office products and Sharepoint
    • Must have good understanding of Project Management practices including planning, scheduling and tracking.
    • Comfortable collaborating with multiple groups with possibly divergent interests including customers, product management, engineering, vendors and management.
    • Self-starting and independent worker with excellent communication skills who understands how to navigate projects firmly and tactfully.
