    About this Position

    Title: Director, Portfolio and Program Management 


    Location: San Francisco, CA 



    The director is accountable for the oversight of portfolio and program management governance process and demand management with business unit stakeholders. The director will oversee the program and project execution practices, in partnership with cross-functional BU across the company. Demand management entails prioritization and integration of business capabilities needing resource investment to be successful.


    Reporting to the director will be PMO program/project managers and extended project management/coordinator staff assigned to PMO.  Program/project managers are accountable for the success of all projects under their supervision and provide oversight and direction to assigned project managers or project coordinators working inside the program structure.  Program/project managers track project status and manages assigned project teams to mitigate issues and risks.  The director is responsible for ensuring adherence to PMO methodology, process, reporting, governance body reviews, and traceability to strategic asks.



    The director is responsible for preparing for and facilitating planning and prioritization meetings on a regular cadence to provide portfolio read out and managing the process for portfolio changes.  This individual is responsible for structuring complex initiatives requiring multiple project tracks to complete and establishing the program management office structure within the portfolio.  Direct oversight of initiatives will be required on an ad-hoc basis but not at the expense of primary role.

    • Manage the investment governance process and operating mechanisms for portfolio demand management, to facilitate planning resourcing requirements and prioritization
    • Work with leadership to enable portfolio planning, determine critical dependencies, identify and prioritize opportunities that could be scaled; and given the rapid pace of change, lead revisions to priorities as necessary
    • Set appropriate goals and priorities that coordinate with key business partners, other organizational units and third party resources
    • Understand and articulate the value for business in project and portfolio management
    • Be the voice of strategic change, executing on both small and large initiatives to support the portfolio and PMO objectives
    • Partner with leadership to develop key performance indicators and project governance guidelines and templates
    • Build a clear and concise model, and road map for project management and successful outcomes
    • Responsible for leading, developing and implementing consistent tools and processes to enable portfolio and PMO, operationalizing project tracking and reporting
    • Continuously improve and innovate project management methodologies – pace, cost, quality
    • Serves as a subject matter expert in routinely briefing key stakeholders on different aspects of assigned initiatives
    • Ensure program/project managers are defining, planning, orchestrating, and delivering a given strategic initiative based on completion of a collection of organized projects
    • Defines and tracks interdependencies between programs to ensures synchronized execution on project milestones while developing, maintaining, and reporting on an overall integrated portfolio delivery plan
    • Oversight of project milestones/objectives, risk and mitigation, and the delivery/completion in a matrix structure
    • Provide work direction, coaching and performance feedback to program/project managers and assigned staff while establishing and maintaining positive relationships with relevant business partners
    • Alignment with other PMO functions in the corporation to have consistent language and adoption of appropriate project management activities
    • Publishes periodic executive project summary status reports
    • Proposes recommendations and adjustments


    • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Business, IT, or related academic qualification/experience of 10-15 years
    • Proven ability to quickly earn the trust of sponsors and key stakeholders; mobilize and motivate teams; set direction and approach; resolve conflict; deliver tough messages with grace; execute with limited information and ambiguity
    • Ability to navigate a highly matrixed organization effectively
    • Experience developing and executing organizational strategy
    • Hands on experience managing large, transformational programs
    • Experience in facilitating change, including collaboration with cross functional stakeholders at all levels
